Reading for Kids

The Garden Path Gift Shop is featuring two new books for kids. Both are written by Linda White, illustrated by Fran Lee, and published by Gibbs Smith, Publisher.

Trekking on a Trail: Hiking Adventures for Kids
Appropriate for ages 8 – 16. Book Price: $9.95

This book, at a mere 63 pages, is packed with useful information to take kids from beginning to end of a hiking adventure. Preparations cover the gamut from warm-up exercises through equipment, including gear, maps, and food. Lists and illustrations demonstrate the importance of appropriate clothing, shoes, and packs; and specific tips are offered like how to determine the most weight a kid should carry.

The comprehensive topic coverage of the book may seem overwhelming to a novice hiker, but young readers are advised to check their preparations with an adult helper and never to hike without an adult. This turns out to be good advice, because the author discusses many situations where an inexperienced hiker would benefit from guidance and interpretation. These include reading a map, making sense of weather signs, recognizing poisonous plants and insects, and identifying animal tracks.

This book is a valuable reference for kids to return to as their outdoor experience increases and they become more aware of the many possibilities for in-depth exploration that nature offers. It also suggests hands-on activities, like crafting a hiking journal, to maximize kids’ involvement and make the hiking adventure more meaningful. A final packing checklist and suggestions for finding more information wrap up the book.

Cooking on a Stick: Campfire Recipes for Kids
Appropriate for ages 8 to 16.  Book Price: $8.95

The organization of this little book makes it easy for young campers to find and carry out the kid-friendly recipes. The sections of the book divide recipes into cooking over a campfire, on a stick, in a pouch, or over the grill – as well as four tasty snack recipes that require no cooking at all.

Like an adult cookbook, each recipe begins with a list of needed ingredients and follows with cooking directions. If some of the preparation can be done beforehand, the author divides the directions into “at home” and “at camp.” The basics of building a campfire and making a cooking stick or foil pouch are thoroughly explained and illustrated; safety tips are integrated throughout the instructions.

Whether going on a week-long camping trip or setting up a pup tent in the back yard, kids from 8 to 16 will have fun making and eating these tasty treats.
